About Us

First Pass Oilfield Contracting Inc. was incorporated in November 2004 and has established business operations since January 2005. The business was established by Dave Dechant and Randy Mattson. Dave was the owner of Dechant Logging Ltd. Where Randy worked as Salvage Operations Manager for 2 years. Together they separated the oilfield division from Dechant Logging to form First Pass Oilfield Contracting Inc.

In May 2007, Dave and Randy dissolved their partnership, and Randy became the sole proprietor of First Pass Oilfield Contracting Inc. Randy has been involved in the logging industry since 1983 starting out in Ontario then moving to Alberta in 1991. He has experience of working in sawmills since out of high school in 1976 and oil patch work up until he started managing in 1996. Being of Aboriginal descent, and with over 10 years of business management experience, Randy Mattson has forged strong business relationships with public, private and Aboriginal sectors, at all levels. Randy brings the company great knowledge and insight into all aspects of the company from bunching to budgets.

In January of 2010 Randy's son, TJ came in as an entry-level equipment operator. Slowly throughout years of operating and learning the industry as well as managing day-to-day operations. TJ was able to acquire a management role in 2014. Progressively as he worked with First Pass Oilfield he began the process of trying to acquire ownership of the company. In 2016, TJ Mattson officially acquired the company you know as First Pass Oilfield.

Since the establishment of the company, First Pass has had the success of securing long term commitments and contracts with major oil companies in clearing of their pipeline and lease sites: ConocoPhillips Canada, BP Energy Company, Shell Canada Energy, Devon Canada, to name a few, along with other numerous local and regional oilfield contractors. With the expansion of the services provided, the company has ventured into other contracting work in and around the Grande Prairie area. First Pass has been involved with the Mountain Pine Beetle Program for the South Peace municipality during the winter of 2007-08. The company also acquired a contract with Ainsworth Canada, now Norbord, to harvest cut to length deciduous timber for their facility located south of Grande Prairie. And in 2012, a log haul contract was incorporated, making First Pass a full stump to dump contractor. In 2015 First Pass acquired an ongoing stump to dump contract with Weyerhaeuser Canada.
